Trong chiến tranh Thế giới II, tàu ngầm đã trở thành một vũ khí lợi hại hòng tiêu diệt những hạm đội trên biển, tàu chở hàng của các nước thù địch.

Das Boot là phim nói về chiếc tàu ngầm U2 do viên thuyền trưởng dày dạn kinh nghiệm (Jürgen Prochnow) điều khiển tiến ra khơi hòng sẽ lập chiến công vang dội. Và trên chuyến đi đó có một quan sát viên của Hải quân - Lieutenant Werner. Những tưởng sẽ là một chuyến đi nhớ đời và tự hào nhưng Lieutenant đã thấy nhiều vấn đề mà có lẽ những ai ở phía sau chiến tuyến sẽ không thể nào hiểu được thế nào là nỗi sợ hãi của chiến tranh.....
